Feng means wind and shui means water. In Chinese culture wind and water are associated with good health, thus good feng shui came to mean good fortune, while bad feng shui means bad luck, or misfortune.
The Taoist belief asserts that human language is incapable of explaining our existence in the world. Chi is a power beyond the physical world. Feng shui works on the assumption that the world is driven by unseen forces. The idea behind it is to "unblock" the way, so the forces may flow freely and create balance in a space (or life).
In Feng Shui, house plants can be used to enhance decor, to fill in missing spaces, corners, and to provide balance and symmetry. Because plants release oxygen and use the carbon dioxide we release into the air from breathing, their health benefits are not just symbolic, they are very real.
Live plants represent the life force and are important elements to have in your environment. House plants emit a positive energy, cleanse the air, and contribute to the positive flow of chi throughout a house.
Dead, dying plants, and declining flower bouquets emit negative energy and should be discarded. Lavender is a powerful herb because it promotes relaxation and peace.
Any healthy plant can increase your home's chi and can be used in feng shui designs. The more beneficial plants are:
- Lucky Bamboo
- Palms
- Dracaena
- Peace Lilies
- Ficus
- Aloe Vera
- Rubber Plants
- Boston Fern
- Heart Leaf Philodendron
- Croton
- Jade (aka Money Plant)
- Cornstalk Plant
- Hanging Plants, esp Spider Plant
The cornstalk plant is an excellent indoor plant commonly used by feng shui experts for its soft, large leaves and for its air purifying qualities.
A healthy home requires a significant supply of "life energy." Bamboo is probably the best known house plant used in Feng Shui decor, but any healthy living plant will emit chi into the room.
Green house plants are one of the easiest ways to incorporate a living force into your space. Fresh cut flowers are also a good choice as long as you discard them promptly when they begin showing signs of wilting. Always replace a dying plant with a larger healthier one, doing so will replenish chi energies.
To enhance Feng Shui and clear space, open windows, turn on a ceiling fan and burn sandalwood incense. Finish your space clearing by making a racket: shake bells, beat drums, clap your hands or grab a favorite CD and crank up the volume!
